Candle Safety at Home: Simple Habits for Enjoying Candlelight
There’s a reason so many of us reach for a candle at the end of a long day. The soft glow and a favourite scent can turn an ordinary room into somewhere you actually want to settle in. A candle is still an open flame, though, and Australia’s fire services regularly remind us that a few simple habits make all the difference.
We love candlelight, so here’s a friendly round-up of what the experts recommend. We’ll also look at the moments when a flameless option might suit you better.
What Australian fire services recommend
Fire and Rescue NSW says many of the residential fires it attends each year are caused by unattended candles. The good news is that most of the advice is easy to follow.
Never leave a lit candle unattended. The Queensland Fire Department advises never leaving a candle alight when you leave home or while you sleep. Fire and Rescue NSW adds that candles should be put out whenever you leave the room.
Give it space. Keep candles well away from curtains, paperwork and other flammable items, with clear space above and around them. The Queensland Fire Department also warns against placing candles on Christmas trees, which is worth remembering as the festive season approaches.
Use a sturdy, heat-resistant base. The Queensland Fire Department recommends a suitable holder on a fire-resistant surface such as a ceramic, metal or glass plate. South Australia’s Metropolitan Fire Service points out that draughts can make wax melt unevenly, which can leave a candle unstable.
Think about who’s around. Place candles where they won’t be knocked over, and keep them up high and away from little ones. The Metropolitan Fire Service also suggests keeping matches and lighters out of children’s sight and reach.
Check your smoke alarms. Fire and Rescue NSW recommends testing your smoke alarms monthly and having a home fire escape plan that everyone knows.
The moments a flame is hard to manage
Even the most careful candle lover knows those moments. You’re getting ready while guests arrive and you’re in and out of the kitchen. You want a gentle glow while you work in the study, but you keep getting up to answer the door or put the kettle on.
In each case, the advice is to blow the candle out, and the glow and scent go with it. That’s the gap AromaHug was designed to fill.
Where a flameless scented candle fits
The AromaHug Rechargeable Flameless Scented Candle is designed to look and feel like a real candle, without an open flame, smoke or melting wax. It pairs a realistic candlelight glow with our 100% natural essential-oil blends.
With no burning wick, AromaHug is an easy way to bring warmth and atmosphere to a room. It releases fragrance without a heating element.
Choose continuous operation or set a one-, two- or four-hour timer. With a timer selected, both candlelight and scent switch off automatically when the time ends, whether you’re using battery or USB-C power. It’s a lovely convenience when you’re settling in with a book on the couch or setting the mood before dinner, because there’s one less thing to remember.
You can choose low, medium or high scent intensity to suit the room, and use the remote to adjust the mood without getting up. When it needs a top-up, AromaHug recharges via USB-C.
Choosing your scent
Each AromaHug comes with one 20 ml bottle of your chosen scent:
- Fresh Air: eucalyptus, pine and lemon. Fresh, green and gently citrus.
- Calm Mind: ginger, rose and lemon. Warm, floral and softly citrus.
- Comfort: cedarwood, vanilla and patchouli. Woody, sweet and earthy.
When your blend runs low, just screw in a new 20 ml refill rather than replacing the whole piece. Can’t pick a favourite? The three-scent collection lets you change the mood from morning to evening.
Keep the glow, keep the good habits
We’ll never tell you to give up your favourite candles. Enjoy them with the simple habits above. When a flame is harder to manage, AromaHug brings candlelight and natural scent together at the touch of a button.
